Around 1:45 pm, Philadelphia police officer Patrick McDonald, 30, was shot and killed in the line of duty.Police said the suspected gunman Daniel Giddings, 27, stood over McDonald and fired several times into the fallen officer as he lay wounded on 2300 block of North 17th Street.
McDonald was an 8-year veteran, and had stopped a car occupied by Giddings, who has a lengthy criminal history, in a traffic stop at 17th and Dauphin.
Responding to McDonald's call for assistance, police officer Richard Bowes, 36, was shot and wounded in the hip by Giddings. Bowes, a 12-year veteran is at Temple Hospital currently listed in stable condition.
Police said at least 30 shots were exchanged. Giddings died at the scene, clutching a .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol.
